March 10, 2018 - The Age-Old Battle with Mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have been the bane of residents and tourists to the Jersey Shore since its earliest days. In the 1600s mosquitoes were so numerous that people wore handkerchiefs over their mouths and kept wet fires burning in their doorways as a deterrent. A common illness suffered by sailors in the Tuckerton Marine Hospital was called Ague, but it was actually malaria. Mike Senyk, Assistant Superintendent of the Ocean County Mosquito Commission will give a fascinating history of mosquito control starting in the 1900s that included hand-ditching the salt marsh and spreading fuel oil on wetlands. Mike Senyk will also talk about how the Ocean County Mosquito Commission keeps eradicating the summertime nemesis and maintaining a livable Jersey Shore. April 21, 2018 - Artist, Historian Cathleen Engelsen. Engelsen is an Ocean County native well known throughout the state for her historical paintings in watercolor, acrylic, and oil. Her sources for local scenes come from her treasury of rare, old photographs by her grandfather W.C. Jones of Tuckerton. Her father owned Sid Pearce's Boatyard and Marine Railway on Tuckerton Creek and she spent many days there. Her family also owned 'Skeeters' a cottage on Tucker's Island. Engelsen will give a power point presentation of W.C. Jones photos and her paintings that starts on the creek, goes across the bay for a day on Tucker's Island and returns for scenes of early 1900s Tuckerton. Engelsen is the vice-regent of the Great John Mathis chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and recently won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission. The artist will also have a selection of her prints, originals and reprints of W.C. Jones photos available for purchase. Reid, President of the Galloway Township Historical Society and President of the Absecon Historical Society, will share his knowledge of historical maps of the area and give a power point presentation of maps of Egg Harbor from 1616 to 1778. Food historian Judith Krall-Russo will discuss the origins of New Jersey’s blueberry starting with Native American and early settlers use of the wild fruit, the cultivation by Elizabeth White and Dr. Frederick Cole in the 1900s and today's blueberry agriculture. The blueberry is touted as a wonder fruit with a host of healthful benefits. Krall-Russo will also bring and share recipes. This program is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Geologist and adjunct professor at Stockton University, Mark Demitroff gives a fascinating talk on how the last Ice Age fashioned our Pinelands terrain and produced their natural oddities: rare orchids, carnivorous plants, spungs, savannahs, blue holes and dunes.
